Road is the sport where company isn't only company: sitting in, you go a good deal easier at the same speed. A group doesn't make the day better, it makes it a different day.

How a road ride gets organised
- The start time is half the ride
- Nobody joins something that "goes out in the morning". A road Nid names the hour and the exact meeting point, because fifteen minutes of slack is ten kilometres of chasing.
- Average pace, not top speed
- Riding at 28 and riding at 34 are two rides that don't mix without someone having a bad time. Say it beforehand and nobody finds out halfway up a climb that they came to the wrong plan.
- A group is visible
- Six riders in a line are seen from much further away than one. On open roads that is far and away the best argument against going out alone.
